Among all the instructive proverbs that give people advice, the one I like most is “Where there is a will, there is a way”. This short, beautiful sentence tells us an incontrovertible truth: if you have a dream and stick to it, you will realize it sooner or later.
For me, the saying has a special meaning. When I was in Junior Middle School, I was so poor in my studies that I nearly gave up. But my head-teacher was always there and gave me confidence every time I lose heart. He used to say, “a little more effort and you will make it.”
Thanks to my dearest teacher, all my efforts paid off and finally I became a top student. “Nothing is impossible to a willing heart”, as long as you have a dream, keep trying and you?ll make it, too.
A requirement for membership in any group is conformity. Members must agree on such vital issues as how decisions will be made, who will serve as leaders, and how much freedom group members will have. The quality of decision making, however, is better when groups encourage nonconformity and disagreement among their members. Although it sometimes creates disorder and conflict, disagreement may prevent powerful majorities from making mistakes.
Assignment: Do groups that encourage nonconformity and disagreement function better than those that discourage it? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.
Other people feel that it is important to rest the mind during leisure time.
You should write at least 250 words.
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
model answer:
It is generally accepted that we all need leisure time to recover from the stresses of work and everyday , I prefer to be active during this time, as I think this suits me better. However, what we do with our leisure time is up to us and no one can say that any particular activity is the best.
Some people relax by watching movies, reading or surfing the internet. People who have physically demanding jobs may choose these types of activities. If you are a nurse or builder, you may feel that you don't want to do a five-kilometre run after work, because you are already physically tired.
Other people do very sedentary jobs. Computer analysts, for example, may spend all day sitting in front of a computer screen. At the end of the working day, they may be keen to stretch their limbs and improve their health by swimming or going to the gym.
Another factor that influences our choice of leisure pursuit is whe...
With the development of technology, today we live in the world with hightechnology.
People seem to can’t live without computer and smart phone, oncethey don’t have smart phone at hand for a while, the seem to be lost and feelsomething miss in their life. When I talk to my friends at table, I find themalways play smart phones or check on the text all the time. Though we sit faceto face, the distance between us is so far. The high technology brings isolationbetween people. Some people don’t often visit their parents and friends, forthey believe that a call can solve all the things. Communication in face to faceis far more important than a call. It is time for some people to put down theirsmart phones for a while when they are communicating to others.
Media should report crimes in details.
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?(20_
Nowadays the media often cover news of crimes such as murder, rape and armed robbery in great details. While such information may warn the public of the potential danger and help reduce crimes, providing too much information about crimes might lead to certain negative side effects. In my opinion, the information about crimes should be made accessible to the public but the media should refrain from reporting crimes in an irresponsible manner.
To begin with, there is no doubt that people should have the right to information about crimes committed in a community. If someone in the neighborhood were murdered, the chance of other people being killed would also increase. The people should be notified of the event as well as any actions the authorities had taken immediately. Any attempts to block the news about the crimes would violate people's right to know the truth. Yet, the necessity of informing the public does not mean full details have to be disclosed.
Admittedly, the best way to alert the public about a recent crime being committed is through the reporting by the media. Most of us read newspaper and watch TV news everyday. But there are a number of reasons why the media should only report the crimes briefly and let any interested parties follow up with the events by themselves. To begin with, the details of the crimes may cause discomfort and even panic among the members of the public. This is particularly true for the young children in the society. In addition, the time on TV and the space on the newspaper are scarce resources that can be utilized in many different ways. Therefore, the detailed reporting of the crimes would incur high opportunity costs as the public attention would have been directed to other important issues such as education and environment. Finally, the full information about crimes may be made available through the police or other government agencies so that anyone interested in the events may consult the records. Such arrangement would be less costly compared to reporting the details via the media.
In conclusion, since crimes are relevant to each and every member of the society, the media should report the events as soon as possible to alert the public and to help prevent more crimes. Nevertheless, the reports of crimes should be relatively brief in order to avoid public panic and to save the precious TV time and newspaper space. Furthermore, anyone who wants to know more about certain events should be allowed to consult the government agencies for such
Parents generally believe it is their responsibility to plan the careers for their children. They claim that they know their children well enough to decide what kind of job suits them. Hoping that their children will go in for professions that will bring them the greatest prestige and economic benefit, many parents think that their children are too young to see this for themselves. There are some parents who even expect their children to take over the careers of their fathers. For these reasons, many parents insist that theirchildren should obey them in choosing careers.
But many children suggest that they should be left free to choose their own careers. For one thing, parents and children may not share the same interest. A job that appeals is likely to be boring for their children. For another, children have been brought up in a different age from their parents’, and therefore, should be allowed to cultivate a spirit of independence and self-reliance. In short, children should be free to make their own decisions as to future careers.
In my opinion, in this case as in many other things, mutual understanding is important. On the one hand, parents’ view does reflect theirconcern for the well-being of their children. On the other hand, after all it is the children who will be doing the jobs. Therefore, it will be wise for parents to give them this freedom while for the children they should consult their parents when it is necessary. (249 words).

When people move to a new country, they should accept the local culture as their own. Do you agree or disagree ?(20_
It is common nowadays for people to move to a new country as immigrants to seek new opportunities for work or to get married. For new immigrants, one of the major issues is to what extent they should accept the local culture as their own. While it is important for the newcomers to follow the local rules and convention in order to adapt to the new environment and start their new lives, I believe that it is beneficial to both the immigrants and their host countries if the new members bring in their own culture and lifestyle for the sake of cultural diversity.
To begin with, new immigrants would make more smooth transition to their new life if they understand how the society of their host countries works and behave accordingly. To consider a simple example, when an American moves to England, she will have to drive on the left side of the road following the English customs. Otherwise, she will immediately find herself either in a severe accident or in jail for breaking the traffic laws. By the same token, a Mexican woman who immigrates to America will have to try to develop her English proficiency in order to better communicate with the local people whose native language is English. Nonetheless, as I will argue later on, following the local convention in one's daily life is one thing, but accepting the local culture as one's own is quite another.
For the American who is now living in England, even though she has to obey all the English laws, she can still choose to retain her American identity and lifestyle. For example, she may cook American food at home and dine with her friends in American-style restaurants. In addition, she can still speak to her children with her American accent and teach her children American values. This is also true for the Mexican woman who moved to America.
In fact, it is now generally acknowledged that cultural diversity should be considered a strength for a nation as people from different backgrounds will have a chance to learn from one another. For example, the American immigrant who cook American food at home might also share with her English neighbors the American recipes and help bring the American cuisine to an English dinner table. The Mexican woman who takes English courses in the local community college may also tutor her American classmates who are learning Spanish or studying Mexican culture.
In conclusion, people who choose to immigrate to a different country may face great challenges and opportunities as they adapt to the new environment. It is true that they need to make the efforts to learn the new rules and culture of the host country. But they should also be encouraged to retain their own cultures and lifestyles as new members of a more diverse society.

Some people believe that hobbies need to be difficult tobe what extent do you agree or disagree?
Some hobbies are relatively easy, while others present more of a , I believe that both types of hobby can be fun, and I therefore disagree with the statement that hobbies need to be difficult in order to be enjoyable.
On the one hand, many people enjoy easy hobbies. One example of an activity that is easy for most people is hobby requires very little equipment, it is simple to learn, and it is remember learning to swim at my local swimming pool when I was a child, and it never felt like a demanding or challenging hobby that I find easy and fun is photography. In my opinion, anyone can take interesting pictures without knowing too much about the technicalities of operating a camera. Despite being straightforward , taking photos is a satisfying activity.
On the other hand, difficult hobbies can sometimes be more exciting. If an activity is more challenging, we might feel a greater sense of satisfaction when we manage to do it successfully. For example, film editing isa hobby that requires a high level of knowledge and expertise. In my case, it took me around two years before l became competent at this activity, but now I enjoy it much more than I did when l believe that many hobbies give us more pleasure when we reach a higher level of performance because the results are better and the feeling of achievement is greater.
ln conclusion, simple hobbies can be fun and relaxing, but difficult hobbies can be equally pleasurable for different reasons.
The two bar charts show the percentages of male and female students in secondary and higher education for four different regions in the world.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Sample Answer:
The two bar charts demonstrate the proportions of boys and girls in two broad categories of education in four different regions of the world.
In general, it is apparent that there are more girls than boys in either secondary or higher education across all the four areas, with two exceptions.
In secondary education, Europe has by far the highest percentages of boy and girl students – 95% and 100%, respectively – which are 9 and 5 times that of their peers in Sub-Saharan Africa. The situations in Latin America and East Asia are comparable – between 40% and 50% for both genders. While the former has slightly more girls than boys, the reverse is true for the latter.
Turning to higher education, although Europe still takes the leading position, the percentages among the four regions are quite close to each other. Whereas Europe beats Sub-Saharan Africa by threefold (45% to 15%) in terms of female percentage, there are always a fractionally larger proportion of students, regardless of their gender, in Latin America than in East Asia.
In summary, the number of students tends to shrink dramatically when they are entering higher education. And it seems that developed countries have a significantly higher percentage of male and female students than many developing ones.
Environmental problems should be solved by the government instead of individuals and private companies. To what extent do you agree or disagree?(20_
Environmental protection is no doubt a major issue confronting the modern society with the development of new technologies and the explosion of world population. While the issue is certainly relevant to each individual citizen and all the companies, some people contend that only the government should be concerned about protecting the environment. I concede that the government should lead the efforts in addressing the environmental problems. Nevertheless, cooperation and participation from the corporations and individual citizens are essential as well.
There is no doubt that the government is the agency that should play the leading roles in solving the environmental problems. To begin with, with the power to collect taxes from individual citizens and private companies, the government have the financial resources that are necessary to deal with environmental issues. In addition, the government may formulate policies to provide incentives for the companies and individuals to reduce the amount of pollution caused by their activities. Finally, the government is the only institution that may enact laws related to environmental problems.
On the other hand, without the cooperation and participation of individual citizens and private companies, the government's efforts to protect the environment would not be effective. For example, the government may launch a campaign to educate the public about the desirability of driving compact cars for reducing the air pollution. The campaign would make little difference if the individuals pay little attention to the information or do not care about the environment at all. Nor would the government's goal be achieved if the car manufacturers do not produce more compact cars for the market. In other words, the government alone cannot solve the problem of environment. It takes the collaborative efforts from individual and corporate citizens to improve the situation.
In conclusion, I agree that the government should take the responsibility to lead the society in addressing the problems of environmental pollution as it has the power and resources necessary to do so. Nonetheless, individual citizens and private companies have to be engaged if the government is to accomplish anything.
Successful sports professionals can earn a great deal more money than people in other important professions. Some people think this is fully justified while others think it is unfair. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
As a result of content media attention, sports professionals in my country have become stars and celebrities, and those at the top are paid huge salaries. Just like movie stars, they live extravagant lifestyles with huge houses and cars.
Many people find their rewards unfair, especially when comparing these super salaries with those of top surgeons or research scientists, or even leading politicians who have the responsibility of governing the country. However, sports salaries are not determined by considering the contribution to society a person makes, or the level of responsibility he or she holds. Instead, they reflect the public popularity of sport in general and the level of public support that successful stars can generate. So the notion of ^v^fairness^v^ is not the issue.
Those who feel that sports stars are justified might argue that the number of professionals with real talent are very few, and the money is a recognition of the skills and dedication a person needs to be successful. Competition is constant and a player is tested every time they perform in their relatively short career. The pressure from the the media is intense and there is little privacy out the the spotlight. So all of these factors may justify the huge earnings.
Personally, I think that the amount of money such sports stars is more justified than the huge earnings of movie stars, but at the same time, it indicates that our society places more value on sport than on more essential professional and achievements.

Countries are becoming more and more similar because people are able to buy the same products anywhere in the world. Do you think this is a positive or negative development? (20_
It is said that countries are becoming similar to each other because of the global spread of the same products, which are now available for purchase almost anywhere. I strongly believe that this modern development is largely detrimental to culture and traditions worldwide.
A country’s history, language and ethos are all inextricably bound up in its manufactured artefacts. If the relentless advance of international brands into every corner of the world continues, these bland packages might one day completely oust the traditional objects of a nation, which would be a loss of richness and diversity in the world, as well as the sad disappearance of the manifestations of a place’s character. What would a Japanese tea ceremony be without its specially crafted teapot, or a Fijian kava ritual without its bowl made from a certain type of tree bark?
Let us not forget either that traditional products, whether these be medicines, cosmetics, toy, clothes, utensils or food, provide employment for local people. The spread of multinational products can often bring in its wake a loss of jobs, as people urn to buying the new brand, perhaps thinking it more glamorous than the one they are used to. This eventually puts old-school craftspeople out of work.
Finally, tourism numbers may also be affected, as travelers become disillusioned with finding every place just the same as the one they visited previously. To see the same products in shops the world over is boring, and does not impel visitors to open their wallets in the same way that trinkets or souvenirs unique to the particular area too.
Some may argue that all people are entitled to have access to the same products, but I say that local objects suit local conditions best, and that faceless uniformity worldwide is an unwelcome and dreary prospect.
I have a warm home, my parents love me, hurt my younger brothers and sisters.
My mother, and a hair, put on his shoulders like a star, and her hobby is watching TV, and sometimes touched the tears came, my mother is a kind-hearted woman, they are allowed to tears the wholeLove, younger brothers and sisters often do not understand why her mother cried.

Task:Some working parents believe childcare centers can provide best care for their children, while others think of other family members like grandparents can do this job. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Sample answer:
Traditionally, toddlers are raised by their relatives such as grandparents in most countries. However, daycare centers have gained a growing popularity among working parents in recent years. From my point of view, attending a childcare center has more benefits.
One obvious argument in favor of daycare centers is that it provides children with the professional childhood education. This is because a good daycare centre is normally equipped with well-trained staff who can impart different skills, such as singing, dancing, painting and storytelling, to children through a variety of activities during the day. In addition to the well-organised, structured projects, toddlers are provided with more opportunities to socialize with other peers, which helps them gain confidence and self-consicousness. However, these opportunities are rare to achieve if they are watched over by grandparents.
Opponents feel that a relative care is as effective as children center. The reason for this is that taking care of a child is never an easy task, as children need constant love and attention. In fact, due to the limited number of caregivers, children are less likely to get the one-on-one care. By contrast, relatives, grandparents in particular, have sufficient time to take care of their beloved grandchildren, which also contributes to the family bond.
I personally believe that no child can become an active and valuable member of any society without intercommunicating with other peers. Therefore, although there are conniving arguments for a relative care, it is better to send them into daycare centers in the childhood period.
In recent years, there has been growing interest in therelationship between equality and personal people believe that individuals can achieve more inegalitarian societies. Others believe that high levels of personal achievement are possible only if individuals are free to succeed or fail according to their individual is your view of the relationship between equality and personal success?
In my opinion, an egalitarian society is one in which everyone has the same rights and the same opportunities. I completely agree that people can achieve more in this kind of society.
Education is an important factor with regard to personal success in life. I believe that all children should have access to free schooling, and higher education should be either free or affordable for all those who chose to pursue a university degree. In a society without free schooling or affordable higher education, only children and young adults from wealthier families would have access to the best learning opportunities, and they would therefore be better prepared for the job market. This kind of inequality would ensure the success of some but harm the prospects of others.
I would argue that equal rights and opportunities are not in conflict with people's freedom to succeed or fail. In other words, equality does not mean that people lose their motivation to succeed, or that they are not allowed to fail. On the contrary, I believe that most people would feel more motivated to work hard and reach their potential if they thought that they lived in a fair society. Those who did not make the same effort would know that they had wasted their opportunity. Inequality, on the other hand, would be more likely to demotivate people because they would know that the odds of success were stacked in favour of those from privileged backgrounds.
In conclusion, it seems to me that there is a positive relationship between equality and personal success.
It is common for enterprises to have seniors as top executives nowadays. However, there is an argument that young people should also be offered the opportunities to be the leaders as the age should not be the glass ceiling that bars them from upper management in large corporations. From my perspective, I agree with this idea.
First of all, young leaders, especially those employed in high-technology companies, are easy to keep pace with the rapidly changing market. Admittedly, compared with senior employees, they do lack experience of the past, but facing this rapid shifting market, their inadequate experience can be in turn seen as an advantage, as being in the same age of the targeting customers, they can understand the current popular tendency and are less likely to be inhibited by self - consciousness. Therefore, they are able to absorb the latest information and use their lateral thinking to make adaptations to meet the demand,. Besides, young people have more abundant time and vigorous to be a leader. Being managers means catering to enormous tasks simultaneously, and as most young people have not been married and formed their families, they can devote themselves to their work and maximise their output, which is impossible for older people.
Undeniably, when facing an emergency or a dilemma, compared with the aged leaders, the young generation tend to be less responsible and considerable, resulting in impulsive decisions due to their immaturity. Consequently, organisations might be at risk. However, young candidates who have the potential to be the manager can be first recruited as the management trainee, and after having the professional training ranging from six months to five years, they are sure to have the capability to deal with diverse situations.
In conclusion, despite the defects of young managers, young people are eligible for leadership. Therefore, organisations should be encouraged to employ the young generation in top positions.
Over the last half century the pace of change in the life of human beings has increased beyond our wildest expectations. This has been driven by technology and scientific breakthroughs that are changing the whole way we view the world on an almost daily basis. This means that change is not always a personal option, but an inescapable fact of life, and we need to consta
