We are drowning in news. Reuters alone puts out three-and-a-half million news stories a year. That's just one source.

My question is: How many of those stories are actually going to matter in the long run? That's the idea behind The Long News. It's a project by The Long Now Foundation, which was founded by TED sters including Kevin Kelly and Stewart Brand. And what we're looking for is news stories that might still matter 50 or 100 or 10,000 years from now. And when you look at the news through that filter, a lot falls by the wayside.

If you take the top stories from the . this last year: Is this going to matter in a decade? Or this? Or this? Really? Is this going to matter in 50 or 100 years? Okay, that was kind of cool. (Laughter) But the top story of this past year was the economy. And I'm just betting that, sooner or later, this particular recession is going to be old news.

So, what kind of stories might make a difference for the future? Well, let's take [medicine]. Someday, little robots will go through our bloodstreams fixing things. That someday is already here if you're a mouse. Some recent stories: Nanobees zap tumors with real bee venom. They're sending genes into the brain. [They've built a robot] that can crawl through the human body.

What about resources? How are we going to feed nine billion people? We're having trouble feeding six billion today. As we heard yesterday, there's over a billion people hungry. Britain will starve without genetically modified crops. Bill Gates, fortunately, has bet a billion on agri research.

What about global politics? The world's going to be very different when and if China sets the agenda, and they may. They've overtaken the . as the world's biggest car market. They've overtaken Germany as the largest exporter. And they've started doing DNA tests on kids to choose their careers.

We're finding all kinds of ways to push back the limits of what we know. Some recent discoveries: There's an ant colony from Argentina that has now spread to every continent but Antarctica. There's a self-directed robot scientist that's made a discovery. Soon, science may no longer need us. And life may no longer need us either. A microbe wakes up after 120,000 years. It seems that with or without us life will go on.

But my pick for the top Long News story of this past year was this one, water found on the moon. Makes it a lot easier to put a colony up there. And if NASA doesn't do it, China might, or somebody in this room might write a big check.

My point is this: In the long run, some news stories are more important than others.

For a nation that has remained relatively insulatedfrom the terrorist violence that roiled the continentin recent years, the sight of British troops patrollingmainland UK streets — one consequence of theterror threat level rising to “critical” — will come asa particular shock. It will raise the spectre of 20__  ,when Tony Blair sent 400 soldiers with armouredvehicles to Heathrow, and the dangerous years thatfollowed, when security services feared that theywere losing their grasp on the problem. The bombingof Manchester Arena on Monday night is redolent ofthat period. It is the worst terrorist attack on Britain since the July 7 London bombings morethan a decade ago and the worst-ever attack on Manchester and the north. But how new andadvanced was this atrocity?

Former officials of the National Counter Terrorism Office (NCTO) have suggested that the attackwas “sophisticated”. This is true, insofar as it represents a step up from the low-technologyvehicle and knife attacks seen in the UK over the past 12 years. Building a bomb is significantlyharder than procuring a van or a blade, and entails several steps — research, acquisition ofmaterials, and perhaps collaboration — that increase the probability of detection by theintelligence services.

Yesterday’s decision by MI5’s Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) to raise the threat levelfor international terrorism, meaning that an attack is expected imminently, probably reflectshome secretary Amber Rudd’s acknowledgment that 22-year-old Salman Abedi “likely?.?.?.?wasn’t doing this on his own”, that such a bomb would have required assistance, and that oneor more accomplices therefore remain on the loose.

The search for such individuals may be protracted: recall that Salah Abdeslam, participant inthe Paris attacks in November , was only caught four months later, across the border inBrussels. After the Brussels bombings, it took 17 days for police to arrest severalsuspects. There is a strong possibility that the threat level will remain elevated through thegeneral election.

At the same time it is useful to assess this attack in a broader perspective. There was justone attacker, compared with the nine involved in Paris. There was one bomb, compared with thethree used in Brussels. The bomb, though designed to maximise shrapnel, and thereforeindicating more than rudimentary knowledge, was not one of the highly advanced non-metallic devices, capable of bypassing security screening, developed by al-Qaeda’s Yemenbranch in recent years, and which has prompted the most recent ban on laptops in cabinbaggage. The perpetrator was not carrying an assault rifle that might have allowed him tomaximise casualties before detonation. “As an island,” noted the National Crime Agency inNovember, “the UK is insulated from the relatively free flow of firearms which exists incontinental Europe”.

British police and intelligence agencies have also quietly signalled to gangs that eveninadvertent provision of weapons to jihadis would bring down crushing pressure. It isprofoundly troubling that a young man should have been able to build an explosive devicewithout the knowledge of his local community or the authorities, but in the context of moderninternational terrorism, this ranked midway on the scale of sophistication.

appears to have a preference for soft targets,” noted Europol’s 20_ terrorist trend report, “because they are more effective than attacks on critical infrastructure, the military, policeand other hard targets”. British security f

orces have factored in this risk for well over a decade.

Finally, Abedi could hardly be more typical of the modern European terrorist: a young, male,second-generation immigrant, drawn into gangs, and known to the authorities. This is a classicprofile. As the French scholar Olivier Roy has observed in the French context, there is a riskthat “second-generation immigrants neither want the culture of their parents nor a westernculture — both have become sources of their self-hatred”. Gang members, as the UK homeaffairs select committee reported in , were part of a “critically vulnerable group because ofthe significant numbers of converts in gangs and the kind of ideology prevalent within thesegroups”. And, like so many others, Abedi was on the security services’ radar, albeit as afringe figure.

What is significant is that Abedi had returned from Libya “days ago”, and probably travelled toSyria too, according to French interior minister Gerard Collomb. He would be the first suchreturnee to conduct an attack in the UK. This will reignite the question of how securityservices can monitor the large number of returnees — possibly several hundred — with limitedresources.

The Manchester attack takes the UK into a period of uncertainty and insecurity. But we arebetter prepared than we were in , when troops last marched out of the barracks; in ,when bombs struck London; or , when the threat level first turned critical. The exactthreat may be uncertain, but its type is not unknown.

It is barely half a century since parts of the Thames were declared ‘biologically dead’ because the river was so with the water now cleaner than at any time in living memory, entrepreneurs want to build a 10 million open-air swimming pool in the middle of the Thames in Central London.

Purification specialists from Germany – which has the highest water cleanliness standards in Europe – have designed a system which the scheme’s backers say will ensure that bathing is safe for visitors of all ages.

The Thames Baths at Temple Stairs on the Embankment will be surrounded by reed beds to filter water from the river before it is pumped into the 82ft by 32ft main lap pool, with a secondary filtration device underneath the poolside concerns have been raised about the project because of sewage overflows during heavy rain and the experience of comedian David Walliams, who suffered a bout of ‘Thames tummy’ during a 140-mile charity swim in experts from German firm Polyplan, which has built natural swimming pools all over Europe, have come up with a Evans, director of British firm Gartenart, which is working on the project, said the water – unheated and chlorine-free – will be ‘as clean as anything you would find in a mountain lake’。

The lido will have changing rooms, a 130ft ramp leading from the shore to the water, a plunge pool and a children’s paddling area, while a 4ft-high glass balustrade will protect swimmers from waves caused by river Romer-Lee, of Studio Octopi – the London architects behind the scheme – said he hoped an initial 300,000 to cover consultancy costs and other fees would be raised by crowd-funding, where members of the public can contribute to community schemes.

If planning permission is granted, the lido could open late next year.

为便于读者更好地理解英语新闻标题,现再列举一些常见诸报端的标题小词,以备不时之需: aid=assist(帮助,援助)alter=change or modify(改变)ask=inquire(询问)assail=denounce(谴责)axe=dismiss\reduce(解雇,减少)balk=impede(阻碍)ban=prohibit or forbid(禁止)bar=prevent(防止,阻止)bare=expose or reveal(暴露,揭露)blast=explode(爆炸)begin=commence(开始)bid=attempt(努力)bilk=cheat(欺骗)bolt=desert or abandon(放弃)boost=increase(增加,提高)check=examine(检查)claim=ause the death of…(夺去……的生命)clash=disagree strong1y(发生分歧,争议)curb=control or restrict(控制)dip=decIlne or decrease(下降)ease=lessen(减轻,缓和)end=terminate(结束,中止)flay=criticize(批评)flout=insult(侮辱)foil=prevent from(阻止,防止)grill = investigate(调查)gut=destroy(摧毁)head=direct(率领)hold=arrest(逮捕)laud=praise(赞扬)lop=diminish(下降,减少)map=work out(制订)mark=celebrate(庆祝)name=appoint\nominate(命名,提名)moot=discuss(讨论)mull=consider(考虑)nab=arrest(逮捕)nip=defeat(击败)nix=deny\disapprove(否决,拒绝)opt=choose(选择)oust=expel(驱逐)peril=endanger(危害,危及)pledge=determine(发誓)plot=conspire(预谋,密谋策划)plunge=plummet(价格等)暴跌poise=ready for action(作好准备)probe=investigate(调查)raid =attack(进攻)rap =criticize(批评)rebuke=criticize(批评)rout=defeat completely(击溃,打垮)slay=murder(谋杀)soar=skyrocket(急剧上升)spur=encourage(激励,鞭策)swap=exchange(交流,交换)sway=influence(影响)trim=reduce(削减)vie=compete(竞争)vow=determine(决心,发誓)weigh=consider(考虑)woo=seek to win(争取,追求)

1、Taking advantage of the two-day dayoffs, he basked1 in the spring sunshine with his family.

2、The central government called on every region to develop its own export-oriented hit products according to its local advantages and characteristic.

3、In order to fully2 tap the human resources, the rational flow of trained personnel should not only be allowed but also be encouraged.

4、To further develop the export一oriented economy, Shanghai is to make a number of preferential policies soon to encourage business people both at home and abroad to set up more enterprises in the the three forms of ventures, i. e. enterprises for Sino-foreign joint3 venture, for Sino-foreign co-production and enterprises with sole foreign capital.

5、The disappearance4 of such materials as pornographic and obscene books, periodicals and tapes is proof that China's campaign against porns is making progress.

6、Some austere5 measures should be taken to check the unhealthy tendencies which, according to the press exposures, were rampant6 in some localities.

7、The next ojective for the Chinese people to strive for is to reach the well-to-do level.

8、He works enthusiastically as ever even though he has retired7 from the leading post.

9、Journalists should firmly object to the payoffs-aimed fournalism which deviates8 from press ethics9.

10、Many large companies in Shanghai have geared themselves to the international conventions and set up aftersales services accepting repairs and dealing10 with customers, complaints.

China's actual conditions

be honest in performing one's official duties

build a clean and honest government; construction of a clean government

abuse of power for personal gain; misuse of power for private interest

be responsible for one's own profit and loss

jack up price 哄抬物价

with the inflation factors deducted; inflation adjusted

single youth above the normal matrimonial age

agricultural people to be given non-agricultural status 农转非

如euthanasia(安乐死),_ [acquired immune deficiency syndrome1 (艾滋病)],elevated highways (高架道路),information superhighway(信息高速公路),beeper(无线传呼机,俗称“拷机”、BP机),cellular phone (移动电话),value-added tax(增值税),latchkey child(挂钥匙的孩子),CD compact disc(光盘)],hula hoop(呼拉圈),surfing(冲浪运动),talking)show(访谈节目;谈话类节目),karaoke(卡拉OK)等新词,无一不是通过英语报刊等媒介传播后而为人们所熟知的。

现代汉语里这类因现实生活中新事物而出现的新词也比比皆是,如“物质文明”(material progress)、“精神文明”(intellectual and ideological2 development)、“五讲四美三热爱”(five advocatings,four points of beauty and three aspects of love)、“扒分”(moonlight)、“斩(宰)客”(rip off)、“打白条”(issue IOUs)、“关系网”(network of personal connections )、“下海”(risk one's fortune in business)、“跳槽”(job-hop)等等。

又如,1969年7月20日,美国阿波罗号(Apollo)宇宙飞船登月成功,许多国家的传播媒介竞相报道,由此也产生了大量有关的新词,现都已广泛使用在日常英语中,如moonwalk(月面行走),moonman(登月飞行员;月球飞行研究者),moonfall(登月),moonscape(月面景色),moonrock(月球岩石),mooncraft(月球飞船),moonport(月球火箭发射场),moonset(月落),moonship(月球飞船),moon shoot(向月球发射;月射),earthrise(地出),space sickness(宇航病),space suit(宇航服),space travel(太空旅行),space walk(太空行走),spaceflight(宇宙飞行),Space Age(航天时代;太空时代),space cadet(宇宙飞行迷),space colony(宇宙空间移民区),space industry(航天工业),spacelift(宇宙运输),space race(太空竞争),space science(航天科学),等等。

一系列与 gay有关的词也随之产生,包括gay—in(_者集会(或_)),gay bar(_者酒吧),gay boy(_男子),gayfriend(_对象),gay civil rights(_公民权),gay community(_群居村)和gay lib(_解放运动;争取_权利运动)等。 再如,brain一词原义主要为“头脑”,现己与一些名词、动词构成许多具有新义的词语,如brain box(电脑,电子计算机),brainchild(脑力劳动成果),brain drain(人才外流),brain gain(人才流入),brainstorm(群策群力;献计献策),brain trust(智囊团),brain truster(智囊;顾问),brainwash(对……实行_;强制灌输),brainwork(脑力劳动),brainworker(脑力劳动者)。

当然也会有Now in sports(现在进入体育新闻)....../Turn to the Middle East(现在转向中东地区)......
