honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen:
today my topic is ’nuclear power: a blessing or a disaster?’
when the first atomic bomb was dropped on hiroshima, japan, the world was thrust into atomic age. meanwhile in the commence of cold war and during its long term, it had set the world into fear and panic of nuclear war many times.
but over the years, nuclear power has found its way to promote goodness for humankind .it promises to provide clean and efficient energy for the centuries to come.
so whether nuclear power a blessing or a disaster?
there is no firm answer for this question from my own perspective.
ladies and gentlemen, my very initial contact with nuclear power was from a tv programme called green space where i saw for the first time how nuclear power had changed people’s lives and what it had left for the residents’ living around chyrnobil nuclear power plant. unfortunately, it was a sad story.
my heart sank when i saw a boy infant appear on the screen smiling with big blue sparkling eyes. he was so cute and adorable just like all the other kids but he was blinded. what’s more, he had to receive medical treatment everyday to alleviate radiation damage, but still stood little chance of growing up. later i learned that inappropriate operation and equipment design defect was responsible for the tradegy .eight years has past, but the picture of that boy’s smile still appears infront of me and reminds me that nuclear power can be a living devil.
however, with the increasing depletion of resources and the instant demand for energy, clean and efficient nuclear power may seem the best choice.
as an old saying goes ’every sword has two blades.’ nuclear power is dangerous, yet efficient; environmental devastated yet clean; expensive yet sustainable. it is a matter of how we use and how we treat it. while let’s beyond all this ,whether nuclear power a blessing or a disaster, it’s ours’ choice.
thank you for listening!
例如“The point is just that I travel away from you while others stay with your counterparts”“Yet I came to understand, gradually, that it was my dad and I who travelled constantly and even willingly, that you were always there, waiting to hold me and caress my face in reunion”“Then I finally learned to love you. I learned to …; I tried to …. I returned to … and turned the pitch black clay into a shimmering statue of you”“I remember that night …. I remember in dream that you tapped my head ….”等。

Change The Unchangeable—You Will When You Believe
Good evening, ladies and gentleman! It’s my great honor to be here giving this speech to you. Thank you so much. My topic of the speech is change the unchangeable-you will when you believe!
You may often hear this when it comes to keeping a positive attitude towards your daily life, ‘‘change the changeable, and accept the unchangeable.” Of course, this is an easy way to avoid panic when meeting with difficult situations. However, I am going to share with you a totally different opinion about dealing with obstacles and having a successful life. That is, change the unchangeable, and you will when you believe.
In our daily life, there are so many things which we considered as the unchangeable. For example, you think you cannot remember all the English words. You think its impossible to be the number one in your class because many students are doing better than you. And also you do not believe that you can change the world by yourself. But now, I am telling you, all of these are not true. There is a chance that you can change the so-called unchangeable things. It’s not a hard as it looks like. All you need to do is to be confident, believing in yourself that you can do it.
In this world, there are two kinds of animals that can climb to the top of the pyramid. One is the eagle, its wings can help it fly to the top of the pyramid easily. The other is the snail, no one believes the snail can do such unchangeable things. But the snail itself believes. Just like water constantly dripping wears holes in stone. Step by step, the confidence and persistence finally help the snail manage to arrive at the top of the pyramid.
The unchangeable things, just like a wall that prevents us from seeing through the essence of life and exploring the colorful world. But confidence can give us courage to break that wall, and a strong will can finally get us there. When meeting with the unchangeable things next time, face it with confidence. Believing that you can do it under any circumstances. As long as we are confident enough to pursue our future dream with great passion and courage, we will make a difference!
Nothing is difficult to a willing heart. Change the unchangeable-you will when you believe!
“我”是他乡的游子;“我”和父亲无时无刻不在路途中;“Only if we could cease to travel and go back to you”;“我”必须“keep traveling”以完成“你”的遗愿——“你”死“我”生那一刻,已注定“我”的不归路;“你”梦中的安抚,扫去“我”途中的孤寂与恐惧。“我”生来是游子,一路上都是故事,故事里充满对“你”的情思。
贯穿全篇的“travel”和“journey”让人想起“Life is a journey, and we are all travelers”的比喻——只要有时空和人的存在,又有什么时间轴上的延展不是journey呢?
Emotions are miscellaneous, such as optimism and pessimisism; merriment and sorrow; excitement and despondency;... Human beings are inherently
emotional and emotions do play a significant role in our actions and attitudes. We may encounter some personal tragedies or sufferings, but the actions and attitudes we take might differ. For example, being moderately positive means that we can keep a sanguine outlook on our experience; means that we can transmute the negative feelings into a positive attitude towards our frustration; means that we can look the unpleasant matters in a positive light and tackle them with great
resilience. Personally, I espouse bing a moderately positive individual.
Hellen Keller, who was blind and deaf, became a celebrated writers with unflagging belief in herself and unyielding willpower. In front of Hellen Keller, there lied two options: either live live to its fullest or wither away like the autumn leaves. Instead of capitulating to the sheer darkness and silence, she harbored prodigious fortitude to vanquish the personal trageies and sufferings. Under the assistance of her teacher Anne, she learnt Braille and writing. After reading a sea of books, Hellen Keller soaked up all the quintessence and wisdom of other writers and attempted to write her own. The spirit of never being pessimistic sustained her in the most darkest hours of her life and she rose like a shinging star in the firmament of writing. Her teacher also held a positive belief in Hellen so she resolved to help Hellen face life positively.
There are innumerable other examplars of being moderately positive. Thomas Edison, by dint of a postive mindset and unwavering pursuit, invented the most endurable and suitable material to make the incandescent bulb which marked the inauguration of the electrical era. Madame Curie, by virtue of a optimistic attitude and steadfast tenacity, extracted an infinitesimal amount of radium from tons of impure materials after three-year-and-nine-month experiment and advocated to use radioisotope to cure cancer which rendered humanity a powerful weapon to fight against the fatal disease. Hua Luogeng, a renowned C, metamorphosed into a math master by holding a positive outlook and unswerving doggedness.
It's not hard to find the common denominator of the brilliant and reverent giants: a positive outlook towards the sufferings and failures.
Being moderately positive will arm us with an effective weapon to repel the enemies of negative feelings that will hold us back and become a stumbling block on the way ahead. It will bolster up our belief and confidence in the face of the mishaps and torments and we will possess a more optimistic perspective to the life tragedies. Being moderately
positive is like a beacon light of hope which will illuminate our way ahead and resembles a lighthouse which show us the path when we are disoriented. Then all the darkness will fade away and crumble into dust. Being
moderately positive is the inner force which propels you froward in the teeth of setback and hurdles. We will ooze confidence and persistence no matter how tough the situation is.
Nevertheless, we are supposed to put the positive mindset in perspective, which means we need to understand it in the appropriate and right way. Here the positive mindset is a moderately positive one, not overly optimistic. Anything that is too much will backfire. The last emperor of Shang Dynasty was being too sanguine and optimistic and believed that his kingdom was impregnable and was never to be toppled by others. Thus he sank into the debauched and promiscuous lifestyle, listened to the malign suggestions of his diabolical officers and precluded any good suggestions from being sent to him. The decadence and depravity eventually led to his downfall and his power was nullified and compromised. This renders us a good lesson that we shall never become overly optimistic about our lives, works, conditions and circumstances because undue and inordinate optimism led to the complacent and smug mentality. It is always counterproductive.
Individuals should always strive for the better selves rather than rest and wallow in self-contentment when the achievements are made. That is why being overly optimistic should be deprecated and criticized.
So, what we need to do is to differentiate the positive mind from the overly-optimistic one, for there is a blurry line between these two. Our capacity to distinguish between them must be acuqired by constant failures and attempts. Always being moderately positive is not an easy task and trying to keep it is even much harder. Sometimes we will become disheartened and lose all the hope; sometimes we will enjoy the
exhilaration of being successful and then get obsessed with the current achievements. Through failures, we can have a much clearer interpretation of being moderately postive. And this is a long process that should be covered step by step and brick by brick.
Can being positive backfaire? I cannot answer in the affirmative. But add _moderately_ to the sentence: Can being moderately positive backfire? My answer is definitely NO.
Variety is the Spice of Life
Nowadays, the transportation are more and more convenient,we can go someplace and visit some friends easily, but an increasing number of people always feel body is close, but how far is it from one soul to another? We feel alone, because we do not care much about what is happening around the world if it does not affect our personal my opinion, life is fine and enjoyable, yet you must learn to enjoy your fine is stupid to just care about should know that variety is the spice of it is important to know events happening around the world, though sometimes they are unlikely to affect our daily life.
There are three points are in favor of my begin with,it can help us realize our life value old Chinese saying goes“ As a man, first, you should cultivate individual moral character, second, you should run the family unison, last, you should manage the nation in order, and peace will prevail throughout the universe”.It means that the highest value in life is to own do not know ourself very much,if we just care about ourself,we can not find the value of our will be too smooth without excitement and boring the life will be!.If we know more events,we will find our life value easily.
Besides,to know events happening around the world can help us make more friends with others. and make our mind you know more, you can make friends with stranger easily because you can find common topic easily.
The judges were asked to evaluate the essays in the writing competition according to three criteria: content/ideas,organisation/development,and language. I shall follow this format.
Content was excellent, very well-argued and thought-through. The writer’s range of knowledge of current social issues was impressive, covering genetics, cloning, AI, disease, MOOCs and the New York stock market. She/he argued persuasively for the continuing evolution of humanity through advances in medicine, AI and technology rather than along Sir David Attenborough’s more simplistic view of evolution as a Darwinian survival of the fittest.
Organisation and development were also outstanding. The writer followed a logical progression, numbering her/his points and with clear and ordered writing. Sentence structure was good, and her/his ideas were presented with clarity and intelligence. The argument had an introduction, definite paragraphs with separate points and a clear conclusion, and the argument was easy to follow yet with intricate knowledge.
Language was where the writer fell down. Although complex vocabulary was used widely and for the part correctly, this piece is not immune from simple grammatical mistakes – in particular
In general, this was an outstanding piece of argument, clear and logical and using a wide range of ideas and concepts.

Human Civilization Outshines Human Intervention
Recent years have witnessed the heated discussion concerning the potentially dire consequences entailed by the unprecedentedly fast development of human society. Some people fear that the uncontrolled advancement of science and technology will bring about adverse ramifications which would eventually take a deadly toll on human beings itself. According to them, ^v^the doomsday clock is on the verge of striking^v^ if we do not endeavor to stop human intervention before it is too late. However, my view on this issue is different. The so-called ^v^human intervention^v^ is, if we view it from another perspective, actually ^v^human civilization^v^, which is not supposed to be to blame for its grandeur and sophistication.
In the first place, the fast-growing medical technology have been making great contributions to human evolving. Thanks to the progress made in medical cares and hospital facilities, human beings are able to live longer and survive harsh circumstances under which our predecessors are vulnerable to disease and death, such as the dessert zones or icy Antarctic areas. Also, human beings have been developing special treatments to combat what was formerly seen as incurable cancers, such as malaria, ^v^, and Ebola, managing to save lives and increase people's sense of security and happiness. All the uplifting results is evidenced in the global life expectancy surging from about 40 years old in the 20th century - the number of which was much dismal in under-developed countries - to over 65 nowadays. Therefore, instead of claiming such human interventions prevent us from adapting to infectious disease through natural selection, we ought to come to the realization that humans are evolving in a more effective and efficient way, that is, through technological advancement.
Secondly, the highly developed genetic knowledge is increasing biodiversity instead of destroying it. Since human beings became curious about how life forms and how myriads of organs and systems function in human bodies, the world has seen the burgeoning of biotechnology and genetic research. Through all the amazing findings by scientists and researchers, human beings not only have a better grasp of the secrets of life, but also propose new ways to enrich life forms. Because of cloning, we are able to ^v^duplicate^v^ endangered animals which would have been extinct otherwise. Because of genetic advancement, we are able to produce hybrid corns and vegetables, which have been pulling millions of people out of the risk of starving to death. Because of genes transplanting, we are able to create creatures we never see and also many other intriguing possibilities. Evolutionary change is not necessarily achieved by longitude natural selection, but also can be accelerated by modern genetic engineering.
Thirdly, the wider currency of artificial intelligence adds rather than distracts. Increasing automation and diminished human contact is the reality of today: a world where dexterous robots replace endless rows of Chinese workers and the trading floor specialists on New York Stock Exchange are ready to hand over the keys to Wall Street's version of SkyNET. That traditional teachers in classrooms give way to their counterparts on YouTube, under the auspices of the leaders of digital economy, is inevitable. Maybe that is necessary. But that is not the reason we should stop it - at least it's cheap and convenient. A case in point is the MOOCs, or Massive Online Open courses. It is essentially online classrooms, and are easily accessible to courses designed by professors from prestigious universities, such as Yale, Caltech and Duke. Even though MOOCs may in a large extent replace traditional teachers, it offers platforms and opportunities for those who fail to be accepted to selective colleges or those who cannot afford expensive high-quality education. It is therefore concluded that machines and modern technologies can be a blessing in disguise.
It may be argued that, no matter how we whitewash advances of modern age, human practice has been definitely intervening the laws of nature. It's true that humans aren't always comply with how nature works, but the interplay between human and nature can also be seen as human's utilization and transformation of nature by using their endless creativity and ingenious mind. More importantly, there's no point denying the advancing of human society. If the case is exactly what the author of the given paragraphs expects, all human intervention should be eliminated, and the best way for humans not to ^v^intervene^v^ is stopping developing, halting making progress and reducing back to barbarous creatures like any other beings then thousands of millions years ago. Needless to say, it is ridiculous and unrealistic.
In a nutshell, human civilization, another interpretation of ^v^human intervention^v^, should not be stopped or discouraged. The effects of human intervention in biological evolution of the human species pales in comparison with the profound significance that human civilization have on human species in terms of modern advanced technologies. The claim ^v^Humans have stopped evolving^v^ is, in my standpoint, ^v^Humans have been evolving, but in a unique human way^v^. And this is, in essence, how humans evolve far smarter and far more sophisticated than any other living beings.

A Traveller's Song
By Meng Jiao
Translated by Liu Jianxun
The thread in the hands of a fond-hearted mother
Makes clothes for the body of her wayward boy;
Carefully she sews and thoroughly she mends,
Dreading the delays that will keep him late from home.
But how much love has the inch-long grass
For three spring months of the light of the sun?
Feeling of youth
No young man believes he shall ever die. it was a saying of my brother's, and a fine one. there is a feeling of eternity in youth, which makes us amend for everything. to be young is to be as one of the immortal gods. one half of time indeed is flown-the other half remains in store for us with all its countletreasures; for there is no line drawn, and we see no limit to our hopes and wishes. we make the coming age our own-
The vast, the unbounded prospect lies before us.
Death. old age. are words without a meaning. that paby us like the idea air which we regard not. others may have undergone, or may still be liable to them-we ^v^bear a charmed life“, which laughs to scorn all such sickly fancies. as in setting out on delightful journey, we strain our eager gaze forward-
Bidding the lovely scenes at distance hail!
And see no end to the landscape, new objects presenting themselves as we advance; so, in the commencement of life, we set no bounds to our inclinations. nor to the unrestricted opportunities of gratifying them. we have as yet found no obstacle, no disposition to flag; and it seems that we can go on so forever. we look round in a new world, full of life, and motion, and ceaseleprogress; and feel in ourselves all the vigor and spirit to keep pace with it, and do not foresee from any present symptoms how we shall be left behind in the natural course of things, decline into old age, and drop into the grave. it is the simplicity, and as it were abstractedneof our feelings in youth, that (so to speak) identifies us with nature, and (our experience being slight and our passions strong) deludes us into a belief of being immortal like it. our short-lives connection with existence we fondly flatter ourselves, is an indissoluble and lasting union-a honeymoon that knows neither coldness, jar, nor separation. as infants smile and sleep, we are rocked in the cradle of our wayward fancies, and lulled into security by the roar of the universe around us0we quaff the cup of life with eager haste without draining it, instead of which it only overflows the more-objects prearound us, filling the mind with their magnitude and with the strong of desires that wait upon them, so that we have no room for the thoughts of death.
