RP最重要的是逻辑，逻辑严密的思路+合理的框架是写好一篇RP的关键，而不是生硬地把几个看似高大上的methods结合在一起。逻辑是体现学生“修为”的重要因素。创新点也好，研究方法也好，这些你的目标导师都可以指导你，甚至直接告诉你。唯独逻辑是体现申请者是否具有科研潜力的关键。逻辑正确的同学往往具备独立解决科研问题的能力，这类同学也往往更受到目标导师的青睐。
很多同学在写RP的时候都提到需要一个新的idea，并且是未经报道过的。实际上，研究过的东西仍然是有研究价值的，你研究的视角不同、体系不同、方法不同，都是创新，都可以是你博士期间的研究计划。所谓的创新点，一定是根据你的Literature Review提炼出来的——首先找到research gap，然后针对这个gap找到一种具有一定新颖性的研究方法或者手段，也就是说：创新性=gap+方法上的创新或者改进。
千万不要认为没有报道过的就一定是创新，因为没有人做过的东西往往意味着没有意义，一个遗落的珍珠被你捡到的可能性太低。举个例子：研究马克思主义对中国影响的人很多，为什么还不停有人去研究呢？因为研究的人越多，说明研究价值就越高。
研究问题应该是你的目标导师感兴趣的问题，同时又是与你自己研究背景相符合的问题。导师不感兴趣，或者你自己根本无法胜任的问题就不是一个好的问题。
另外，好的研究问题应该是一个具体的问题，太大的问题不行，需要精确且突出重点。举个例子：“中国美食与健康的关系”，这个研究问题就太大，几乎不可能在博士阶段完成如此宏大的系统研究，你需要将研究问题细化，突出重点，并且增加深度——“基于均衡膳食理论的湘菜配料与成年男士肥胖的关系研究”这个题目就瞬间小而准，符合博士论文和研究计划的要求了。
一篇合格的RP大概应该有20篇左右的参考文献，除去研究背景和重要性需要引用的文献，大概需要找到10篇左右的文献支撑Literature Review这个部分。这10篇文献中至少应该有3-5篇你的目标导师的文献，另外5-7篇就需要通过Web of Science、Scopus、Google Scholar等数据库进行精炼和选择。一般引用最近五年的文献和引用次数较高的经典文献。
现在的博士申请中，大多数学生文献综述出现的问题包括：组织结构不清晰，缺乏重点，整体性和连贯性太过冗长；没有引用有影响力的文献，没有跟上最新发展情况；没有对所引文献进行批判性地评估；引用了不相关或不重要的文献或者过于依赖二手资料等等。
