someone said "we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite". i don’t know who wrote these words, but i’ve always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want it to be. we are all in the position of the farmers. if we plant a good seed ,we reap a good harvest. if we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.
we are young. "how to spend the youth?" it is a meaningful question. to answer it, first i have to ask "what do you understand by the word youth?" youth is not a time of life, it’s a state of mind. it’s not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips or supple knees. it’s the matter of the will. it’s the freshness of the deep spring of life.
a poet said "to see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour. several days ago, i had a chance to listen to a lecture. i learnt a lot there. i’d like to share it with all of you. let’s show our right palms. we can see three lines that show how our and life is. i have a short line of life. what about yours? i wondered whether we could see our future in this way. well, let’s make a fist. where is our future? where is our love, career, and life? tell , it is in our hands. it is held in ourselves.
we all want the future to be better than the past. but the future can go better itself. don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened. from the past, we’ve learnt that the life is tough, but we are tougher. we’ve learnt that we can’t choose how we feel, but we can choose what about it. failure doesn’t mean you don’t have it, it does mean you should do it in a different way. failure doesn’t mean you should give up, it does mean you must try harder.

the longer i live, the more i realize the impact of attitude on life.
attitude to me is more important than facts.
it is more important than the past,than education,than money,than circumstances, than failures,than successes,than what the other people think,say,or do.
it is more important than the appearance,the giftedness or skill.
it will make or break a company,a church ,a home.

if you look around at the men and women whom you can call happy，you willsee that they all have certain things in common。 the most important of thesethings is an activity which at most gradually builds up something that you areglad to see coming into existence。 women who take an instinctive pleasure intheir children can get this kind of satisfaction out of bringing up a family。artists and authors and men of science get happiness in this way if their ownwork seems good to them。 but there are many humbler forms of the same kind ofpleasure。 many men who spend their working life in the city devote theirweekends to voluntary and unremunerated toil in their gardens，and when thespring comes，they experience all the joys of having created beauty。
the whole subject of happiness has，in my opinion，been treated toosolemnly。 it had been thought that man cannot be happy without a theory of lifeor a religion。 perhaps those who have been rendered unhappy by a bad theory mayneed a better theory to help them to recovery，just as you may need a tonic whenyou have been ill。 but when things are normal a man should be healthy without atonic and happy without a theory。 it is the simple things that really matter。 ifa man delights in his wife and children，has success in work，and finds pleasurein the alternation of day and night，spring and autumn，he will be happywhatever his philosophy may be。 if，on the other hand，he finds his wifefateful，his childrens noise unendurable，and the office a nightmare；if in thedaytime he longs for night，and at night sighs for the light of day，then whathe needs is not a new philosophy but a new regimen————a different diet，or moreexercise，or what not。
man is an animal，and his happiness depends on his physiology more than helikes to think。 this is a humble conclusion，but i cannot make myself disbelieveit。 unhappy businessmen，i am convinced，would increase their happiness more bywalking six miles every day than by any conceivable change of philosophy。

在我看来，整个关于快乐的话题一向都被太严肃的对待过了。过去一直有这样的看法：如果没有一种生活的理论或者宗教信仰，人是不可能幸福的。也许那些由于理论不好才导致不快乐的人需要一种较好的理论帮助他们重新快活起来，就像你生过病需要吃补药一样。但是，正常情况下，一个人不吃补药也应当是健康的；没有理论也应当是幸福的。真正有关系的是一些简单的事情。如果一个男人喜爱他的妻子儿女，事业有成，而且无论白天黑夜，春去秋来，总是感到高兴，那么不管他的理论如何，都会是快乐的。反之，如果他讨厌自己的妻子，受不了孩子们的吵闹，而且害怕上班；如果他白天盼望夜晚，而到了晚上又巴望着天明，那么，他所需要的就不是一种新的理论，而是一种新的生活————改变饮食习惯，多锻炼身体等等。

大家好！
去年有一件事深深地触动了我。有一天我感冒了，很严重。我嘶哑着嗓子去给学生上课，那天恰巧我穿了件新衣。刚走进教室，初中七年级的学生们就围了上来大呼小叫地说：“miss zhu beaitiful beaitiful，miss zhu！”我刚张开嘴让他们安静下来，突然有个声音大声地说：“不要吵了！老师的嗓子哑了！老师的嗓子都哑了！”顿时整个教室安静了下来，学生们都在自己的座位上端正地坐好，安静地看着我。
当我张开嘴让他们跟着我念单词时又有同学举手提议：“老师，我们今天学唱英文歌吧！我们能自己跟着磁带学，那样你的嗓子会好得快些，妈妈说嗓子哑了要少说话！”多懂事的孩子，只知他们平时爱惹我生气，不知他们竟也知道关心我！下课了，孩子们硬要把剥好的橘子塞进我的嘴里，说：“老师吃了它吧！吃了你的嗓子就会好了！”在那一刻我感受到了三十多颗幼小的心灵对我的抚慰，感受到了他们对我的理解和支持，作为一名幼儿教师我心甘情愿了！
去年十二月，我要教四个班的英语、要忙于迎接期末考试、要为教师文艺汇演紧张地排练、要为圣诞节英语晚会准备初中七年级的英语节目。初中生懂的英语比较少，我没法将台词写下来让他们自己去背，只能嘴对嘴的一字一词地教。紧张的排练和不定时的加班几乎压垮了我，我真想甩手不干了。
有一天几遍排练下来后孩子们已经练得气喘吁吁了，我说：“你们累了，就早点休息吧！”可是没有一个孩子离开我，他们围在我身边仰着小脸恳切地说：“老师，咱们再练一会儿吧！我们不累！真的，我们不怕累！”看着孩子们汗津津的小脸，我突然感到自己是那么的软弱。我说，你们不怕，老师也不怕，咱们一起练。排练结束后，我和孩子们一起笑着闹着，心里感受到一种从未有过的轻松，我知道是孩子们帮助了我，鼓舞了我。当我在台下看着他们成功的表演时，泪水再也忍不住地流了下来，作为一名人民教师爱的奉献是无尽的。

over the past spring festival, i got involved in a family dispute. right before i got home, four satellite channels of cctv were added to the 14 channels we had already had. in prime time at night, they all had interesting shows. therefore, the five of us-my parents, my sisters and i-had to argue over what to watch. finally, we agreed that we should watch the "most interesting" programme... if we
could agree what that was.
however, all of us there remember that for a long time after we had tv, there were only one or two channels available. the increase in options reveals an important change in our life: the abundance of choice.
fifteen years ago we all dressed in one style and in one colour. today, we select from a wide variety of designs and shades.
fifteen years ago, we read few newspapers. today, we read english newspapers like the china daily and the 21st century, as well as various chinese newspapers.
fifteen years ago, english majors took only courses in language and literature. today, we also study western culture, journalism, business communications, international relations, and computer science.
the emergence of choices marks the beginning of a new era in china's history; an era of diversity, of material and cultural richness, and an era of the rebirth of the chinese nation.
we enjoy the abundance of choice. but this has not come easily.
about 150 years ago, china was forced to open up its door by western canons and gunboats. it has been through the struggle and sacrifice of generations that we finally have gained the opportunity to choose for ourselves. the policy of reform and openness is the choice that has made all the difference.
like others of my age, i'm too young to have experienced the time when the chinese people had no right to choose. however, as the next century draws near, it is time to ask: what does choice really mean to us young people?
is choice a game that relies on chance or luck? is choice an empty promise that never materializes? or is choice a puzzle so difficult that we have to avoid it?
first, i would like to say: to choose means to claim opportunities.
i am a third-year english major. an important choice for me, of course, is what to do upon graduation. i can go to graduate school, at home or abroad. i can go to work as a teacher, a translator, a journalist, an editor and a diplomat. actually, the system of mutual selection has allowed me to approach almost every career opportunity in china.

我是英语专业三年级学生，我所面临的一个重大选择当然是毕业后的去向。我可以攻读硕士学位，或在国内，或在国外。我可以走上工作岗位，做名教师，翻译，记者，编辑或外交家.实际上，双向选择的体制在我面前铺开了通向各行各业的大道。
说真的，这个选择并不好做。我愿意在像北京、上海、深圳这样的大都市里工作，我也盼着能回到虽不那么发达却使我倍感亲切的故乡。我希望可以留在生活节奏快，令人兴奋的沿海地带，我也愿意扎根于广炭的中西部地区，那里虽然条件艰苦，却有极大的发展潜力。
