在传统的英语阅读教学模式下，阅读教学的重心只是围绕考试大纲背记语法句式和各级单词，阅读课悄然演变成语法分析课或词汇讲解课，学生只扮演忠实的听众，并未真正参与到阅读交流活动中。此外，为迎合大班教学的快速运转，阅读能力的评价与测试也多以选择题为主（80%）。再者，长期以来，中学生英语阅读素材过于陈旧，缺少时效性，可接受的信息十分匮乏。一些专家指出，这种被动的、理论脱离实际的阅读教学方法，忽视了学生语篇分析能力的培养，不利于拓展学生的文化知识面，不利于培养、提高学生分析和解决问题的能力。
新课标明确要求在初高中阶段实施一定量的课外累计阅读（初中10万～20万字，高中20万～36万字），阅读内容不应重复课本内容。这一新规不仅为英语阅读教学提供了充分的阅读空间，还使精泛结合，学以致用有可能成为现实，而且首次为广大英语教师探索新的阅读教学的途径和模式提供了机遇与挑战。
一、英文报刊阅读
英文报刊是日新月异的当今世界政治、经济、科技、文化乃至社会生活等各个触角的最佳表现渠道，现代英语中新词语的出现与这些领域里产生的新事物、新问题、新现象等无不有着千丝万缕的联系。因此，英文报刊信息量大，是英语教科书远远无法比拟的。报刊内容丰富多彩，贴近学生生活实际，贴近时代；报刊语言清新、简练、妙趣横生、浅显易懂、纯正地道、富有感染力。这些生动鲜活的阅读素材能迅速丰富学生的词汇量、阅读量，使学生养成用英语思维的习惯；能开阔视野，提高人文素养，培养跨东西方文化的意识，让学生在潜移默化中成为具有强大阅读能力的人。
二、分享式讨论模式
拓展更多的阅读途径，加大语言输入量，开阔学生的知识视野，提高学生的阅读水平，逐步实现从题感向语感的过渡，最终实现语言输出能力的快速提高是每位一线英语教师的首要目标。而分享式阅读讨论模式无疑是提高英语阅读实效性的一种行之有效的课堂教学模式。
实际上，阅读讨论模式不是当代教育的创举，在我国母语阅读传统中早就有以书会友的习俗，曾有“读书亦无友，孤陋而寡闻”的说法，陶渊明在他的《移居》中也写道：“奇文共欣赏，疑义相与析。”分享式阅读讨论由阅读中小组成员创设问题或情境开始，引发学生讨论经验同新信息之间的矛盾冲突，激起质疑探究的兴趣。通过讨论中的倾听、质疑、析疑、辨疑等活动途径，让学生在自主、合作、探究中平等地参与阅读，并在对阅读素材的体验中有充分发言和表现的机会。
三、分享式阅读讨论模式在英语阅读教学中的运用
1.阅读讨论小组的编组方式
分享小组成员的人数以5～6人为宜，座位方式可以是T字形、扇形、环形等。分享讨论强调的是小组的集体行为，教师分组时应该考虑小组成员的学业水平、能力倾向、个性特征乃至社会家庭背景等方面的差异，让不同特质、不同层次的学生进行优化组合。分组的科学性既可以保障小组合作成员的优势互补，又有利于开展小组间各项比赛的公平性。
2.阅读讨论小组成员的角色分工
在完成阅读任务的过程中，要明确分工，责任到人。每位成员必须有一个特定身份及明确的工作职责，确保人人都有任务可做，人人都有体验的机会。在不同的活动中，还可以采取分工轮换制，让学生有多重锻炼。
