Step by step, Yuan became the leading figure of the rice-growing world. In 1970 he made a breakthrough which is supported by government. Yuan made a contribution in agriculture, not only to China, but to the whole world. As far as I am concerned, he is more than a scientist. He is a hero.

In the worst-hit areas, the yield of rice plummeted from 7,500 kilograms per hectare in average years to 750 kilograms per hectare last year, or even to none.
Local farmers blamed misleading advertisements for their loss.
On the package of seeds sold to farmers, the ad claims the strains have high disease-resistance levels, with an incidence rate of 25 percent. 本该“颐养天年”的年龄，袁隆平却依然奔走在田野中，做着自己的“禾下乘凉梦”。
袁隆平曾说到他有两个梦：
一个是禾下乘凉梦。我的梦里水稻长得有高粱那么高、子粒有花生米那么大。
另外一个梦想就是，我希望我的亩产1000公斤早日实现，实现了以后还有没有更高的目标呢？我希望培养一些年轻人向更高的一千一、一千二百公斤来奋斗。这就是我的梦，为我们国家的粮食安全做出我应有的贡献。
他说，“我的梦想很简单”，而事实证明，这简单的梦想却解决了世界亿万人口的吃饭问题：
据不完全统计，全世界有二十二亿五千万亩水稻，20_年中国的杂交稻在印度、越南、菲律宾、美国、巴西等国家推广的面积有九千多万亩，平均亩产量比当地优良品种高出二百六十斤左右。
国际友人称颂这位“当代神农氏”培育的杂交水稻是中国继指南针、火药、造纸、活字印刷之后，对人类作出的“第五大贡献”。
