Yoe Go Your Way,I'll Go Mine
A young boy faces the impossible task of trying to soften the blow of tragic mews.
You Go Your Way, I'll Go Mine
The messenger got off his bicycle in front of the house of Mrs. Rosa Sandoval. He went to the door and knocked gently. He knew almost immediately that someone was inside the house. He could not hear anything, but he was sure the knock was bringing someone to the door and he was most eager to see who this person would be -- his woman named Rosa Sandoval who was now to heat of murder in the world and to feel it in herself. The door was not a long time opening, but there was no hurry in the way it moved on its hinges. The movement of the door was as if, whoever she was, she and nothing in the world to fear. Then the door was open, and there she was.
To Homer the Mexican woman was beautiful. He could see that she had been patient all her life, so that now, after years of it, her lips were set in a gentle and saintly smile. But like all people who never receive telegrams the appearance of a messenger at the front door is full of terrible implication. Homer knew that Mrs. Rosa Sandoval was shocked to see him. Her first word was the first word of all surprise. She said xxxOh,xxx as if instead of a messenger she had thought of opening the door to someone she had know a long time and would be pleased to sit down with. Before she spoke again she studied Homer's eyes and Homer Knew that she knew the message was not a welcome one.
xxxYou have a telegram?xxx she said.
It wasn't Homer's fault. His work was to deliver telegrams. Even so, it seemed to him that he was part of the whole mistake. He felt awkward and almost as if he alone were responsible for what had happened. At the same time he wanted to come right out and say, xxxI'm only a messenger, Mrs. Sandoval, I'm very sorry I must bring you a telegram like this, but it is only because it is my work to do so.xxx
xxxWho is it for?xxx the Mexican woman said.
xxxMrs. Rosa Sandoval, 1129 G Street.xxx Homer said. He extended the telegram to the Mexican woman, but she would not touch it.
xxxAre you Mrs. Sandoval?xxx Homer said.
xxxPlease, xxx the woman said. xxxPlease come in. I cannot read English. I am Mexican. I read only La Prensa which comes from Mexico City.xxx She paused a moment and looked at the boy standing awkwardly as near the door as he could be and still be inside the house.
xxxPlease, xxx she said, xxxwhat does the telegram say?xxx
xxxMrs. Sandoval, xxx the messenger said, xxxthe telegram says --xxx
But now the woman interrupted him. xxxBut you must open the telegram and read it to me,xxx she said. xxxYou have not opened it.xxx
xxxYes, ma'am,xxx Homer said as if he were speaking to a school teacher who had just corrected him.
He opened the telegram with nervous fingers. The Mexican woman stooped to pick up the torn envelope, and tried to smooth it out. As she did so she said, xxxWho sent the telegram -- my son Juan Domingo?xxx
xxxNo, ma'am.xxx Homer said. xxxThe telegram is from the War Department.xxx
xxxWar Department?xxx the Mexican woman said.
xxxMrs. Sandoval, xxx Homer said swiftly, xxxyour son is dead. Maybe it's a mistake, Everybody makes a mistake, Mrs. Sandoval. Maybe it wasn't your son. Maybe it was somebody else. The telegram says it was Juan Domingo. But maybe the telegram is wrong, xxx
The Mexican woman pretended not to hear.
xxxOh, do not be afraid, xxx she said. xxxCome inside. Come inside. I will bring you candy.xxx She took the boy's arm and brought him to the table at the center of the room and there she made him sit.
xxxAll boys like candy, xxx she said. xxxI will bring you candy.xxx She went into another room and soon returned with an old chocolate candy box. She opened the box at the table and in it Homer saw a strange kind of candy.
xxxHere, xxx she said. xxxEat this candy. All boys like candy.xxx
Homer took a piece of the candy from the box, put it into his mouth, and tried to chew.
xxxYou would not bring me a bad telegram, xxx she said. xxxYou are a good boy -- like my little Juanito when he was a little boy. Eat another piece.xxx And she made the messenger take another piece of the candy.
Homer sat chewing the dry candy while the Mexican woman talked. xxxIt is our own candy, xxx she said, xxxfrom cactus. I made it for my Juanito when he come home, but you eat it. You are my boy, too.xxx
Now suddenly she began to sob, holding herself in as if weeping were a disgrace. Homer wanted to get up and run, but he knew he would stay. He even thought he might stay the rest of his life. He just didn't know what else to do to try to make the woman less unhappy, and if she had asked him to take the place of her son, he would not have been able to refuse, because he would not have known how. He got to his feet, as if by standing he meant to begin correcting what could not be corrected and then he knew the foolishness of this intention and became more awkward than ever. In his heart he was saying over and over again, xxxWhat can I do? What the hell can I do? I'm only the messenger.xxx

The Present
It was the old lady's birthday.
She got up early to be ready for the post. From the second floor flat she could see the postman when he came down the street, and the little boy from the ground floor brought up her letters on the rare occasions when anything came.
Today she was sure the would be something. Myra wouldn't forget her mother's birthday, even if she seldom wrote at other times. Of course Myra was busy. Her husband had been made Mayor, and Myra herself had got a medal for her work the aged.
The old lady was proud of Myra, but Enid was the daughter she loved. Enid had never married, but had seemed content to live with her mother, and teach in a primary school round the corner.
One evening, however, Enid said, xxxI've arranged for Mrs. Morrison to look after you for a few days, Mother. Tomorrow I have to go into hospital--just a minor operation, I'll soon be home.xxx
In the morning she went, but never came back--she died on the operating table. Myra came to the funeral, and in her efficient way arranged for Mrs. Morrison to come in and light the fire and give the old lady her breakfast.
Two years ago that was, and since then Myra had been to see her mother three times, but her husband never.
The old lady was eight today. She had put on her best dress. Perhaps--perhaps Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday, another decade lined or endured just as you chose to look at it.
Even if Myra did not come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that. Two spots of colour brightened her cheeks. She was excited--like a child. She would enjoy her day.
Yesterday Mrs. Morrison had given the flat an extra clean, and today she had brought a card and a bunch of marigolds when she came to do the breakfast. Mrs. Grant downstairs had made a cake, and in the afternoon she was going down there to tea. The little boy, Johnnie, had been up with a packet of mints, and said he wouldn't go out to play until the post had come.
xxxI guess you'll get lots and lots of presents, xxx he said, xxxI did last were when I was six.xxx
What would she like? A pair of slippers perhaps. Or a new cardigan. A cardigan would be lovely. Blue's such a pretty colour. Jim had always liked her in blue. Or a table lamp. Or a book, a travel book, with pictures, or a little clock, with clear black numbers. So many lovely things.
She stood by the window, watching. The postman turned round the corner on his bicycle. Her heart beat fast. Johnnie had seen him too and ran to the gate.
Then clatter, clatter up the stairs. Johnnie knocked at her door.
xxxGranny, granny, xxx he shouted, xxxI've got your post.xxx
He gave her four envelopes. Three were unsealed cards from old friends. The fourth was sealed, in Myra's writing. The old lady felt a pang of disappointment.
xxxNo parcel, Johnnie?xxx
xxxNo, granny.xxx
Maybe the parcel was too large to come by letter post. That was it. It would come later by parcel post. She must be patient.
Almost reluctantly she tore the envelope open. Folded in the card was a piece of paper. Written on the card was a message under the printed Happy Birthday -- Buy yourself something nice with the cheque, Myra and Harold.
The cheque fluttered to the floor like a bird with a broken wing. Slowly the old lady stooped to pick it up. Her present, her lovely present. With trembling fingers she tore it into little bits.
First of all, every writer is also a sharer. With so many generous sharers, the world has become wonderful.
You may not have the chance to travel thousands of miles, but you have the chance to read thousands of books. Reading thousands of books is a journey of thousands of miles?
We can listen to a person talk about his own life, his childhood, youth, middle age, old age, his life, can it inspire us? We can also listen to him tell other people's stories, twists and turns strange, sentimental, and endure humiliation with the protagonist. We can hear many knowledgeable people tell us what the world looks like, or this person may not be knowledgeable, but he is very familiar with the place he describes. We can understand the general appearance of the world by listening to a few more people. Of course, we will also listen to those experienced people talk about their industry experience and professional knowledge.
Want to know about psychology? Let's listen to the master of psychology about what kind of discipline it is. To understand physics, many teachers are ready to serve you. If you want to know how to manage a company, there are more such sharers.
Take your eyes, your ears and your brain, wander in the sea of books and wander. You can go wherever you want.
The people who write books are sincere and sincere. They are the crystallization of wisdom and the talk of experience. If you listen, your world will become magnificent.
Reading should be miscellaneous. The world is three-dimensional, and reading should also be three-dimensional. If you only study one thing all your life, that kind of life is too boring. In a utilitarian way, reading only is the same, but it doesn't help. The stone of the mountain can attack jade.
There are some books in this world that can be labeled with the word xxxJingxxx. After thousands of years, thousands of talented people are reading them, shining in the refining of history. Through reading, we can communicate with the ancients across time and space, listen to their teachings, and accept their baptism and guidance.
You love reading. Standing behind you is the world's top think tank. Great people will help you, wise people will help you, and experts will help you. You can draw on others for your use.
You are the master of the world. If you want to understand this, you should listen to the teacher's introduction in this aspect. If you want to understand that, you should listen to the teacher's narration in that aspect. Reading the book alive is not xxxI note the six classicsxxx, but xxxthe six classics note mexxx. Everything is ready for me and is my treasure.
It's a pity for you to keep such a treasure without using it!
The global population is living longer, and getting older,
The global population is living longer, and getting older, which presents new challenges. “The question becomes:who will take care of everyone While people will always be the best caregivers for people, there just aren’t enough people. That’s where robot:ic technology can really make a difference,” says Professor Maja Mataric at the University of Southern California.
Her group is developing robots to work with stroke (中风) patients and elderly people. The research team has found that people react well to a robot gym instructor, and seem to get less frustrated with it than with instructions given on a computer screen. The robot can act as a perfect trainer, with infinite(极大的) patience.
“People say things like ‘I prefer this robot to my husband! Can I take it home’” according to Professor Mataric. “In fact there’s a really important point here. As we create these care giving technologies,we’re helping not only the people that need the care, but also the people caring for them. We can give them a break, and help them avoid burnout.”
People are going to have to like, and importantly trust robots before they welcome them into their homes, and several groups around the world are working on making it easier to communicate with them.
Much of human communication takes place through body language. Gestures, eye contact , and concepts of personal space are all things that robots are being taught. In learning about how people interact(互动) with machines, researchers are also discovering new roles for robots in our lives. Robots can communicate with humans in ways that other technologies can not.
“If someone finds the robot to be more persuasive and more reliable, that’s going to affect how they interact with it,” says Dr Cynthia Breazeal, director of the Personal Robots Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “We can now start to think about fields where it’s the social interaction, which is the main means by which a robot helps someone.” Dr Breazeal says that means robots could be used in education, learning, and health care, where social support is important.
Maja Mataric mainly focused on robots’ function of ________.
things care
can robots be wonderful trainers in the gym
they are more clever.
they give correct instructions.
they cost less money.
they are more patient.
underlined word “burnout” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
tired angry
hurt disappointed

Here’s something to think about the next time you ask your teacher for help:trying hard to do schoolwork on your own can help you to a recent study, the more you try while you are learning new information, the better you can remember it later.
This might surprise teachers are presenting new information, they often give students lots of a new study shows this may not be the best way to support learning.“Don’t be too quick to get help when learning something new,”education expert Ma Kapur said.“Try to work on it yourself even if it means trying different ways.’’
Kapur came up with the idea that trying hard can lead to better he tested it out on students in separated students into two the first group, students were asked to solve math problems with the teacher’s the second group, students were asked to solve the same problems by helping one another, instead of getting help from the teacher.

Just after reading online, I know that April 23 is xxxworld reading dayxxx every year. It is also the anniversary of the death of Spanish writer Cervantes and British writer Shakespeare.
In fact, for a person who loves reading, it doesn't matter whether there is xxxworld reading dayxxx. Anyway, I always have to eat rice every day and read books every day... It feels like my soul is walking in the world of books. Sometimes, even a citizen's tabloid can drive away the temporary depression, and even occasionally read short articles that brighten one's eyes; Sometimes, a popular magazine can kill a lot of boring time. Although it is like fast food, it is difficult to remember its charm, I can't read it correctly when I have nothing to do next time.
British scientist Bacon said: reading history makes people wise, reading poetry makes people smart, mathematics makes people thoughtful, science makes people profound, ethics makes people solemn, and logic and rhetoric makes people eloquent. His analysis is indeed incisive and thorough. However, I think if reading pays too much attention to its rationality, it will lose a lot of fun. Like me, I read miscellaneous books, intensive reading or rough reading, all according to my own preferences, leisurely like sightseeing, but gradually improved my appreciation ability.
I have always believed that reading should refuse utilitarianism. When I'm alone at home, I also read some famous classics. Although I read it casually when I was young, it was mainly to cope with the correspondence examination at that time. When I couldn't read it, I also xxxhardened my scalpxxx to read it, so that I sometimes felt that reading was like taking injections and medicine after illness, but it was more painful. If someone tells you that no matter what famous works you read, it is a pleasant spiritual enjoyment, it is definitely self deception. Now I generally try to slow down my reading of famous works and think while reading. The harvest is much richer than before. Generally speaking, Chinese novels are more suitable for Chinese people's reading habits than foreign ones, because the plot is more compact. However, the exquisite and superb scene descri ption ability and insightful narrative skills of some foreign master writers have to impress you. For example, Maupassant, Shakespeare and Leo Tolstoy, their language skills are worth pondering and tasting. Slowly, the lanolin balls, hamlets and Anna Karenina will enter your heart and deeply touch and shock your soul.
Like now, I like one more xxxWorld Book Dayxxx. But now the price of books is a little outrageous, and I buy less. More often, I choose to read on the xxxInternetxxx, which is also a small compensation for myself.
(1)Why do earthquakes happen?
(2)What will the cities be when an earthquake happens?
(3)In what provinces in China did earthquakes happen in the past?
(4)In what other places of the world do earthquakes often happen?
(5)How can we prevent the buildings from destroying in earthquakes?
I am a little bookworm. I remember once when I came home from school, I threw down my schoolbag, picked up a book and read it with interest, forgetting all my homework. Mom asked, xxxdidn't I come back today?xxx I said, xxxyes!xxx The mother asked, xxxthen why don't you do it?xxx I said: xxxI came back to read, because this book is so good-looking that I was fascinated by it, so I forgot to do my homework!xxx Mother said, xxxah, do it quickly, and you'll stay up late again later!xxx I just reluctantly put down the book.
Sometimes, when I am reading, I forget to eat and do my homework. Sometimes, I read books when I eat and when I go to the bathroom. When I was reading a book called the classic story of cultivating children's love, I learned that being a man should have love; When I was reading a book called the classic story of cultivating children's courage, I learned to be brave; When I read the book of the forest newspaper, I loved nature even more.
A good book is a delicious meal for you to taste carefully; A good book is not only your mentor, but also a tool to help you broaden your mind; A good book, or a time axis, brings you to a world full of happiness... Therefore, we should read more books, read good books and increase some knowledge.
The basic flag of the United States is one of the world‘s oldest national flags. Only the basic flags of Austria, Denmark, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland are older.
During the discovery and settlement of what is now the United States, the flags of various European nations were flown over the land, as symbols of possession. Later, in the Colonial and Revolutionary War periods, flags representing famous persons, places, and events were flown in the American Colonies.
The first official flag of the United States was created by Congress on June 14,1777, It consisted of 13 alternate red an white stripes and 13 white stars in a field of blue, representing the 13 colonies that had declared their independence in 1776. Congress adopted a new flag of 15 stars and 15 stripes in 1795 to give representation to the two new states admitted into the Union, Vermont and Kentucky.
By 1817, there were 20 states in the Union, and it became apparent that adding one stripe for each new state would destroy the shape of the flag. As a result, Congress in 1818 restored the original design of 13 stripes and provided that each state was to be represented by one star. In 1912 President William H. Taft made the first official provision for the arrangement of the stars. He ordered that there be six even rows of eight stars each. Previously the arrangement of the stars had been left to the flag-maker‘s fancy.
The evolution of the Stars and Stripes reflects the growth of the United States. After the admission of Hawaii into the Union in 1959, the flag was officially changed for the 26th times since its creation. There are many government flags flown in the United States in addition to the
national flag. Among them are the president‘s and vice-president‘s flags and those of the federal departments and some federal agencies. Each state in the Union has an official flag. The Unitedd States Navy uses special flags for signaling. basic flag of the United States is______.

Motivation(动机) to satisfy one‘s needs is brought about by ―drives‖, These ―drives‖ do not determine man‘s behaviour, but rather direct man‘s energy towards certain aims. For example, man‘s body requires food, which is a biological need, when this need comes up, man feels uncomfortable and his thoughts turn to getting food or satisfying that need. If he is very hungry, it will difficult for him to pay enough attention to anything except his need for food.
While all men feel hungry, there is more than one method for helping free people of this uncomfortable feeling. How needs are satisfying depends on what we have been taught or what we have learned from our experiences. As we grow, we learn shat foods our society considers acceptable, and how they should be prepared and eaten. In some societies, for example, pork is considered a special food while in other societies it is strictly forbidden. In some societies fish is always cooked, but in other societies raw (生的) fish is preferred. The way in which we satisfy a drive is a learned response. Nature has not built a food – getting response into man. He cannot just eat whatever he wants of whenever there is food, his satisfaction of the hunger drive, for example, is limited by the rules of a society. Although we are hunger, according to the rules of society, we should not steal food, even if it belongs someone weaker than we are.
to the passage,drives‖ _____.
be brought about by motivation
always decide man‘s action.
man‘s energy toward certain goals.
man‘s motivations.
2. ____ is a biological need.
B. Drive C. Hunger D. Experience

A. man should satisfy his biological needs whenever necessary.
‘s needs should always be satisfied without any condition.
